Refurbishing Craig-Y-Trwyn

Built in 1991, Craig-Y-Trwyn is a three-storey building located in South Wales. Craig-Y-Trwyn once provided a home to 38 people, but when we became aware of the development it was clear to us an upgrade and some reassessment was required before new residents could make it their home.

Working with partners, we wanted to refurbish Craig-Y-Trwyn to transform it into a modern home for multiple people. Our plan was to reduce the number of existing bedrooms from 38 to 14, to create a more comfortable and more accessible living environment for all.

Transforming Craig-Y-Trwyn

To transform Craig-Y-Trwyn the project team conducted a soft strip out, including the removal of existing furniture. Internal spaces were then reconfigured to create space for 14 one-bedroom, self-contained apartments, to include an open plan lounge/dining area, kitchenette, bedroom, and bathroom.

Works included decoration, electrics, flooring, plumbing, plastering and repointing. An existing commercial grade kitchen was retained, a dumb waiter was removed, and windows benefitted from remedial works.

External works included the upgrade of the garden, and the installation of new boundary fencing. Sections of the driveway benefited from new tarmac, and isolated repairs were undertaken to the roof.

Creating a home at Craig-Y-Trwyn

Through clear communication and careful planning, Craig-Y-Trwyn has been remodelled, from an existing 38-bedroom care home into a supported living home for 14 people. The building has been redesigned, refurbished and reconfigured to create a collection of self-contained apartments, which include kitchens and bathrooms that are compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).

Each floor is accessible via lifts, with wide corridors throughout. Handrails are fitted in key areas of the home, and ramps are installed to external doors to ensure accessibility.

Craig-Y-Trwyn is situated in a prime location in the Crosskeys area, a short distance from many local amenities, including bus routes.
