When we first viewed Northons Lane, the property was a vacant building on a residential street in the East of England. In its previous existence the building provided commercial office space, something it could have continued to do, but with a little rethinking and the correct team in place, we knew it could be re-purposed.
Working with our partners, we initiated a plan to renovate the internal areas of the structure, converting the two-storey property into a collection of self-contained apartments. The vision was for four, two-bedroom apartments, along with a separate space for staff.
Transforming Northons Lane
To convert Northons Lane into a new home, the team removed a number of existing features including glass partitions, a suspended ceiling, a gas boiler, redundant pipework, and external air conditioning units. External signage, CCTV units and a car charging point were also removed from the property, while existing door openings were closed, and new openings were formed.
Internally the property was divided up with new partitions, creating separate living spaces with each apartment including two bedrooms, a lounge and kitchen. Kitchens were fitted with new appliances, bathrooms were fitted with handrails and shower seats, and a staff area was created on the ground floor, complete with en-suite bathroom.
Additional work included plastering, new electrics, coving repairs, the installation of intercoms and fire detection devices, as well as a new heating system. Windows, flooring and carpets were installed, and the building benefitted from full decoration works.
To complete the project new DDA compliant concrete access ramps were installed to all exits, with accompanying Kee Klamp tubular handrails. Soft landscaping was undertaken to the rear garden, including raised garden beds, and a new lockable gate was installed to the side elevations.
Creating a home at Northons Lane
With work complete on Northons Lane the property provides a home for vulnerable people on a supported living basis. Residents have their own apartments, providing them with independence, while staff are available when support is required.
Northons Lane has been refurbished and remodelled to ensure a safe and comfortable living environment. The building may not have started its life as a home, but it is certainly a home now.
